This decision was made at the Government of Georgia Meloni meeting on December 1. This continues the direction taken by Mario Draghi’s Government, which expires on December 31 this year.

Italy will provide Ukraine with weapons in 2023

The Government of Georgia Meloni unanimously approved a resolution on military assistance to Ukraine in 2023 to help the country defending itself against Russia’s war of agression. Thus, Italy’s military assistance to Ukraine will remain unchanged next year.

In addition, the Italian Government may allocate the sixth package of defense assistance to Ukraine at the end of this year or early next year. In particular, this package may include air defense systems requested by Ukraine and missiles for them.

On December 1, the Italian parliament canceled the vote on the continuation of arms supplies to Ukraine. The leading opposition group, the center-left Democratic Party, complained that this decree was not directly related to Ukraine and accused the Government of violating parliamentary rules.

In response, Minister for Parliamentary Relations Luca Chiriani said that the Government would consider holding the event as a separate decree while ensuring its quick approval.

Italian Minister of Defense Guido Crozetto, a member of the “Brothers of Italy” party – the right-wing party of the new Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who is a strong supporter of Ukraine, also promised to continue supporting Ukraine next year.
