Russian strike destroys Freedom TV newsroom in Kyiv

On the night of April 6, a Russian ballistic missile attack on Kyiv destroyed buildings that housed the editorial offices of the state-owned Multimedia Broadcasting Platform of Ukraine. This was reported by the Freedom Channel.

Ukrainian Freedom TV, broadcasting in Russian, aims at delivering truth about Russia’s war in Ukraine to Russian-speaking audiences, including countering Russian state propaganda.

Among the channels of this media company are Freedom, Dim, UATVEnglish, The Gaze, UATVEspañol, UATVArabic, UATVPortuguês, digital editorial office, and service departments. The publication’s staff did not sustain any injuries.

The top three floors of the business center building, which housed foreign broadcasting channels, were destroyed; a crater is now located next to the building, and the lower floors were also damaged and are unusable.

The Russian missile attack on Kyiv at night on February 12 caused damage to the Ukrainian foreign broadcasting channels, FreeDOM and Dim. The newsroom of the Freedom channel sustained significant damage. The channel continued to broadcast from a backup studio.

According to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on the night of April 6, 2025, the Russian invading troops launched a combined attack on Ukraine with air-, land-, and sea-based missiles and attack UAVs. According to preliminary data, the Air Force’s radio engineering troops detected and escorted 132 Russian air attacks—23 missiles of various types and 109 attack drones.

The Ukrainian state-owned foreign broadcasting company, FREEDOM (UATV), broadcasts in Russian to Russian-speaking audiences abroad.

The channel’s goal is to inform foreign audiences about events in Ukraine, broadcast the truth about Russia’s war against Ukraine, and counteract Kremlin propaganda narratives in the global media space.

On March 10, 2022, the state-owned Multimedia Broadcasting Platform of Ukraine, together with leading Ukrainian media groups, began producing and broadcasting the FREEDOM information marathon in Russian to report the truth about events in Ukraine in the context of a full-scale invasion to the world. In August 2022, UATV changed its logo to FREEDOM.
