The European Commission has threatened Elon Musk to ban Twitter in Europe if the billionaire does not follow content moderation rules and arbitrarily restores blocked users’ accounts.
Musk violates the rules of the EU
A warning was given to Elon Musk during the negotiations by EU Commissioner Thierry Breton, who is responsible for the implementation of the digital policy of the European Union.
The official emphasized that Twitter must comply with EU rules and conduct extensive independent auditing and moderation of the social platform’s content and not arbitrarily restore previously blocked accounts.
In addition, the head of justice of the European Commission, Didier Reynders, also called on Musk to comply with EU rules on combating hate and misinformation online.
The Financial Times report that Musk has been told that if he doesn’t follow the rules, Twitter could run afoul of the EU’s new digital services law and face a ban in the EU or a fine of up to 6% of annual turnover.
Musk stated that he had read the law and believed it should be applied worldwide. He also promised that Twitter would follow all the rules.
Elon Musk’s decisions in Twitter
Previously, Elon Musk, in his first address to Twitter employees after buying the company for $44 billion, announced possible bankruptcy if the social media does not start bringing in more money.
At the same time, Musk is making “dangerous actions” against the brand, in particular, unilaterally restoring banned accounts, such as the account of former US President Donald Trump.
It should be noted that hundreds of Twitter Inc employees decided to quit after the company’s new owner, Elon Musk, introduced stricter work conditions.
