Only a minority of people in Great Britain believe that leaving the EU was the right decision. More than half of respondents believe the UK was better inside the EU.
The sociological company YouGov has conducted a new survey among the residents of the United Kingdom. A record number of Britons believe that Brexit was a mistake.
According to the survey, despite the minor economic benefits of voting to leave the EU in June 2016, 57% of Brits said the Brexit decision was a mistake. Only 32% of citizens believe it was the right decision.
More than half of the respondents, 55%, said they would vote to return to the EU. And 31% of respondents said they would remain outside the bloc if the referendum were held today.
YouGov noted that the survey results showed a “moderate shift” compared to January 2021, when 49% of respondents said they would vote to join and 37% voted to leave the EU.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said in May that Brexit brings benefits, citing free ports and VAT cuts that he said would make some goods cheaper.
In contrast, economists believe free ports are unlikely to boost the British economy but may be of limited value as a tool for regional development. In addition, British business investment has barely grown since mid-2016, unlike in other developed countries.
In late October 2022, a march of thousands of protesters took place in central London. They demanded to return to the European Union.
