Catherine Deneuve supported Ukraine at Cannes International Film Festival

The world of cinema stands with Ukraine. French cinema legend Catherine Deneuve supported Ukraine at the 76th Cannes International Film Festival.

At the opening of the 76th Cannes Film Festival, the world-famous actress Catherine Deneuve recited Ukrainian poet Lesya Ukrainka’s poem “Hope” in French. After that, she posted the video on her Twitter page. Catherine Deneuve said she thinks a lot of Ukraine.

The poem starts with words “I no longer have either happiness or freedom, only one hope remained to me…”

Many world’s most prominent cultural and cinema figures have expressed their support for Ukraine after Russia started an unprovoked unlawful war against Ukraine.

Ukrainian poet’s poem “Hope” dates back to 1880, when Lesya was only 9 years old. She wrote it when she found out that her aunt Olena Kosach was sent into exile for participating in the revolutionary movement.

Catherine Deneuve read this poem on the French TV channel TV5 Monde in a program dedicated to the year of Russia’s full-scale attack on Ukraine. At the same time, the French star actor Alain Delon read the most famous Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko’s “Testament” in French.
