The Viru County Court in Estonia has sentenced Igor Lobin, a resident of Narva, to five years in prison for collaborating with Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) and conducting espionage against the Estonian state. The verdict was reported by Estonia’s public broadcaster, ERR.
Espionage Since 2017
According to the Estonian prosecutor’s office, Lobin had been in contact with the FSB since 2017. Over the years, he collected and transmitted information on highly sensitive areas, including Estonia’s defense and internal security, the activities of law enforcement agencies, the training of the Defense Forces and Kaitseliit (Estonian Defense League), as well as the country’s shift to Estonian-language education and the preparedness of state institutions for crises.
State Prosecutor Triinu Olev-Aas emphasized that Lobin’s activities directly threatened Estonia’s constitutional order and undermined national security. She noted that such crimes carry heavy sentences because they compromise not only Estonia’s safety but also that of the wider EU and NATO.
Russian Spy Network in the Baltics
Estonian authorities described Lobin as a tool of Russian influence operations, with the goal of destabilizing Estonian society and creating vulnerabilities across NATO’s eastern flank. His sentencing comes amid a broader crackdown on Russian intelligence networks in the Baltics.
Just recently, Latvia’s State Security Service (SSS) detained a man accused of spying on military facilities and passing classified information to Russian intelligence.
In August, a 63-year-old Estonian-Russian citizen, Erna Moiseeva, was sentenced to three years in prison for collaborating with the FSB in intelligence activities and sanctions violations.
The cases highlight Moscow’s persistent efforts to penetrate security systems in the Baltic states, which remain among the most active supporters of Ukraine in Europe and are key to NATO’s eastern defense.
