EU assists Ukraine in bringing war criminals to justice – Metsola

In Lviv on Saturday, during a three-day conference on war crimes, President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola met with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Metsola is scheduled to speak at the “United for Justice” war crimes conference, which intends to unite international partners in order to create a war crimes court for Russia and its leaders.

Metsola stressed the necessity for accountability for war crimes during a press conference, saying that “whoever is accountable for these crimes deserves to pay.” She also voiced her support for the establishment of a special court to try war criminals, such Russian President Vladimir Putin, for their actions in Ukraine.

“How is no longer relevant. The question is when. It entails bringing those who must answer for their actions—including Vladimir Putin—to justice. We won’t have peace without that,” Metsola said.

The meeting, which Ukraine is hosting, aims to discuss war crimes perpetrated during the continuing conflict in eastern Ukraine, which has claimed over 13,000 lives since 2014.

The role of international institutions like the United Nations and the International Criminal Court in prosecuting war criminals is another topic being covered during the conference.

Metsola’s trip to Lviv demonstrates the European Parliament’s dedication to helping Ukraine handle the ongoing conflict and seek restitution for war crime victims. The visit also draws attention to how crucial international cooperation is in combating the problem of war crimes and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable.

The “Together for Justice” conference on war crimes is a crucial step in addressing the problem in Ukraine and holding offenders accountable, while also highlighting the need for ongoing international support for Ukraine and its efforts to bring about peace and justice in the region.
