EU to continue military aid to Ukraine in case of temporary ceasefire – DW

The EU plans to supply weapons to Ukraine even during a temporary ceasefire in the Russia-Ukraine war to ensure Kyiv’s strong position in the negotiations.

The EU Foreign Affairs Council will discuss new military aid for Ukraine, which could include a package worth 20 to 40 billion euros.

European diplomats emphasize the importance of strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities during the ceasefire to prevent Russia from giving it a “second chance” to attack.

More weapons for strong position in talks

The European Union plans to supply Ukraine with weapons even during a possible temporary truce. The supply will allow Kyiv to have a strong position in the negotiations and to defend itself in case of a second attack by Russia, Deutsche Welle reported, citing its sources.

Even if the fighting stops, diplomats believe that the EU should not forget the provision of weapons to Ukraine.

On the eve of the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting on March 14, the European Union expressed its support for Ukraine during the ceasefire. It is likely that Europe will continue to supply weapons even if the aggressor demands that it stop.

The European Union wants Ukraine to be in a stronger position in peace talks and to be able to reject a “bad” deal, as US President Donald Trump would say, and choose a better time for negotiations,” said one European diplomat to DW.

Another official agreed, stating that Ukraine must become a “porcupine of steel” during the suspension of hostilities. The EU will seek to strengthen Kyiv’s bargaining position and prevent the Russians from getting a “second chance” to attack.

“The idea is that, in a strong position, Ukraine would improve its defense capabilities and be able to continue deterrence in the event of a resumption of hostilities,” the EU representative said.

The EU’s new aid package for Ukraine

At a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council on March 17, diplomats will discuss the ceasefire in more detail. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha will join the meeting via video link.

Brussels explained that Ukraine’s defense is linked to the security of the European Union, so it is critical to discuss such issues.

In addition, next week, EU countries may hold discussions on the plan of High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas. She proposes to provide Ukraine with another military aid package worth 20 to 40 billion euros.

This new EU military aid package to Ukraine would include artillery shells, air defense systems, and missiles, as well as training and equipment for Ukrainian brigades.

However, even if the EU members agree on a new aid package, questions remain about its provision, including the amount, timing, and distribution of the burden between countries.
