Alyaksandr Lukashenko, the president of Belarus, declared that there could be “nuclear weapons for everyone” if any other nation wants to join the union with Russia and Belarus.
Concerns in the West were raised last week when Russia moved forward with a plan to place tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus. This was the Kremlin’s first placement of such warheads outside of Russia since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.
In an interview that aired on Russian state television late on Sunday Lukashenko stated that it must be “strategically understood” that Minsk and Moscow have a rare opportunity to unite.
He also emphasized that Kazakhstan needs to become a member of the Union State of Russia and Belarus. No one is opposed to Kazakhstan and other nations establishing close ties with the Russian Federation, according to the dictator of Belarus.
“If someone is worried… it is very simple: join in the Union State of Belarus and Russia. That’s all, there will be nuclear weapons for everyone,”
Alyaksandr Lukashenko, Belarusian President
Russia and Belarus are formally part of a Union State since 1999.
In February of last year, Russia invaded their shared neighbor Ukraine from Belarus, and since then, their military collaboration has grown, with joint training drills taking place on Belarusian territory.
The S-400 mobile surface-to-air missile systems arrived from Moscow on Sunday, according to the Belarusian Defense Ministry, and will shortly be prepared for combat service.
