Moldova Faces Intensified Russian Disinformation Campaign, Government Warns

Moldovan government spokesman Daniel Vode has called on citizens to resist the growing wave of Russian disinformation targeting the country. He stressed that pro-Kremlin channels are increasingly spreading false and manipulative narratives, especially those designed to undermine Moldova’s EU accession process and portray its “militarization” as a threat.

Deschide.md reported that these efforts are targeting Moldova’s path toward European integration, democratic reforms, and modernization.

According to Vode, some of the most widespread false narratives include claims that “EU integration takes away our sovereignty,” “justice is politically controlled,” “Moldova is being militarized,” “the economy is collapsing and Moldova is isolated,” and “the West is attacking the church and traditional values.”

He stressed that such alarmist and manipulative messages are designed to halt the country’s progress, undermine trust in democratic institutions, and erode public support for the European Union.

The spokesman countered these narratives with what he called “cold, concrete numbers,” highlighting achievements under Moldova’s pro-European course. These include doubling the budget for families and children, salary increases for doctors, teachers, police officers, cultural workers, and other professions, and record public investment.

Notably, 3 billion lei have been allocated for hospital modernization, alongside infrastructure projects such as 700 km of modernized roads, 940 km of new water networks, 220 km of sewage, and 610 km of street lighting. In addition, 200 schools and kindergartens have been modernized, and 254 parks and sports fields have been renovated.

Vode underlined that the government remains committed to modernization and regional development, working on projects in healthcare, education, energy efficiency, and basic infrastructure. He warned, however, that “lie factories” will intensify their activity in the coming months. To counter this, Moldovan authorities plan to maintain direct communication with citizens via press conferences, public updates, and other available platforms.

“The truth matters. Elections matter. Moldova now has a good direction—towards modernization, development, and Europe,” Vode said, calling on citizens to share accurate information with family and friends. “Informed people are protected people.”

Moldova has faced repeated Kremlin disinformation campaigns in recent years. In December, pro-Russian accounts circulated false claims that Chisinau was preparing for war in Transnistria. More recently, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service alleged—without evidence—that NATO was plotting to involve Moldova in a future conflict with Moscow.
