Polish security services have arrested a man accused of conducting espionage against Warsaw and its NATO allies, placing him in custody for three months.
The suspect, a citizen of one of the post-Soviet Asian countries, is described as a career military intelligence officer working for Russia. He was detained on August 1 by agents of the Internal Security Agency (ABW) and later charged by the Polish prosecutor’s office, Minister-Coordinator of Special Services Tomasz Siemoniak said, PAP reported.
“On Wednesday, Internal Security Agency (ABW) officers detained a citizen of one of the Asian states that emerged after the fall of the USSR. He was a military intelligence officer who conducted intelligence activities that threatened the security of the Republic of Poland and allied military structures. The National Prosecutor’s Office filed charges against him, and on August 1, 2025, the suspect was arrested by court order for three months. Our officers demonstrate the highest level of professionalism!”
According to Siemoniak, the man’s activities were aimed at undermining Poland’s security and targeting military structures of allied countries. A court approved the pre-trial detention, which will last until the investigation progresses further.
The case comes amid a series of espionage and sabotage incidents in Poland linked to Russian intelligence networks. Earlier this week, authorities detained a 27-year-old Colombian suspected of working for Russian operatives and orchestrating two arson attacks on construction warehouses in Warsaw and Radom in 2024.
Broader Pattern of Russian-Linked Sabotage
In a separate case earlier this year, Polish prosecutors charged two Ukrainian nationals in connection with an arson attack on a Warsaw shopping mall on May 12, 2024.
Officials believe these incidents form part of a coordinated Russian campaign targeting Poland’s infrastructure and economy.
