Polish border guard stabbed by a migrant near Belarus border, President convenes National Security Council

A Polish border guard who was stabbed near the village of Dubicze Cerkiewne when migrants tried to break through from Belarus died.

Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, Polish Defense Minister, reported this on X.

The wounded border guard named Mateusz spent more than a week in the hospital, but doctors were unable to save him.

“It is with deep sadness that I say goodbye to our soldier Mateusz, who, despite the efforts of doctors, died because of a bandit attack while protecting the Polish border,” the Polish minister said.

He added that the Polish border guard’s devotion to his country “is an example of the highest courage.”

On May 28, a group of about 50 foreigners threw branches and stones at Polish patrols near the border outpost in the village of Dubicze Cerkiewne. When the migrants tried to cross the border by force, one of them stabbed a Polish soldier.

After that, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced restrictions on access to the border area.

Polish President Andrzej Duda decided to convene a meeting of the National Security Council due to the events of recent months on the border with Belarus, where migration pressure and the number of attacks on border guards have increased, PAP reported.

During the briefing, Duda faced questions regarding the military police’s detention of three soldiers who had fired warning shots at migrants attempting to cross the border from Belarus in late March and early April.

The Polish president expressed shock at the detention and questioned the timing of the announcement. Duda added that he was concerned not only about this, but also about attacks on Polish border guards guarding the border with Belarus.

The situation on the Belarusian-Polish border has recently escalated again, with clashes between migrants and border guards occurring regularly.
