Potential far-right shift in German politics

As Europe gears up for the European Parliament elections scheduled for June 6-9, 2024, Germany is once again in the spotlight due to a brewing political scandal involving the Alternative for Germany (AfD).

These associations have led to several scandals, especially with the upcoming European Parliament elections drawing close.

A recent notable incident involves the arrest of a German citizen of Chinese descent, an aide to AfD member Maximilian Krah, on charges of espionage for Beijing.

“Identity and Democracy” and AfD

AfD is part of the “Identity and Democracy” group in the European Parliament, a coalition known for its far-right and Eurosceptic positions. 

This group is expected to expand its presence from 73 to potentially 82 seats, according to latest polls from Europe Elects. 

However, this growth might be jeopardized if the recent scandals surrounding Krah and his associates influence public opinion and electoral outcomes.

AfD’s foreign policy, particularly its opposition to NATO expansion and reluctance to support Ukraine against Russian aggression, positions it uniquely in German politics. 

The party advocates for Ukraine to remain a “buffer zone” between NATO and Russia, reflecting a broader populist trend that could influence EU policy-making.
