Putin claims that Russia supports Taliban in battle against West

In circumstances where “special services feed groups” that resist terrorists, the Russian Federation, according to its president, maintains the proper level of connections with the Taliban.

Putin stated as much during the conference between Russia and Central Asia.

“The Taliban group is fought by Western special services, notably American and British, who are shelling the borders of some of our countries. We maintain the required level of connection with the leadership of the Taliban movement because we are aware of the risks and threats involved in this”, Putin assered.

Russia “maintains the proper level of connections with the Taliban”

The situation in Afghanistan is described by the president of the Russian Federation as a “hotbed of tension,” which is threatened by refugee flows and terrorist threats.

The Russian dictator highlighted that it was in everyone’s best interests to stop the Afghan civil war from breaking up again.

At the same time, Russia continues its cruel war against Ukraine despite the condemnation by the world’s community and the UN resolution.

What is the Taliban?

In 2021, the Taliban retook control of Afghanistan, 20 years after being ousted by a military alliance led by the US.

As the Afghan military fell apart, the hardline Islamist organization marched quickly throughout the country, capturing province after province before capturing Kabul on August 15 of last year.

The swiftness of the advance astonished the foreign forces, who had already promised to depart, forcing them to speed their departure. Thousands of their fellow citizens and foreigners who feared Taliban authority hurried to leave the country.

Within a few weeks, the Taliban had taken over all of Afghanistan, a feat they had failed to accomplish during their previous rule from 1996 to 2001.

Following a violent but eventually victorious guerilla struggle that lasted for several years, the organization had reached an agreement with the Americans in 2020 for the withdrawal of US forces, as BBC reported.

Then, the Taliban introduced punishments in line with their strict interpretation of Sharia law, such as public executions of convicted murderers and adulterers, and hand amputation for those ruled guilty of theft. Men were forced to grow beards and women were forced to wear the all-covering burqa.
