“Putin miscalculated badly”: Biden declares on 2nd anniversary of the full-scale invasion

US President Joe Biden made a statement on the second anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and announced new sanctions against Russia. The White House statement says this.

“Two years later, we see even more vividly what we’ve known since day one: Putin miscalculated badly. The brave people of Ukraine fight on, unbowed in their determination to defend their freedom and future. NATO is stronger, larger, and more united than ever. And the unprecedented 50-nation global coalition in support of Ukraine, led by the United States, remains committed to providing critical assistance to Ukraine and holding Russia accountable for its aggression.”

According to Biden, Americans and people around the world understand that the stakes in this fight extend far beyond Ukraine. Instead, “if Putin does not pay the price for death and destruction, he will continue.”

Biden announced US sanctions against Russia

“Today, I am announcing more than 500 new sanctions against Russia for its war of aggression against Ukraine and for the death of Alexei Navalny,” the US president said.

Joe Biden emphasized that these sanctions will target people associated with Navalny’s imprisonment, as well as the Russian financial sector, defense industry, procurement networks, and those who evade sanctions.

The sanctions will also apply to 100 organizations that support the “Russian war machine.”

We are also imposing new export restrictions on nearly 100 entities for providing backdoor support for Russia’s war machine. We are taking action to further reduce Russia’s energy revenues. And I’ve directed my team to strengthen support for civil society, independent media, and those who fight for democracy around the world.

On the same day, the EU approved the 13th package of sanctions against Russia. 106 individuals and 88 legal entities involved in undermining Ukraine’s sovereignty faced restrictive measures.
