Russian Intelligence ties with RT: US measures against Kremlin propaganda

In a significant move, the U.S. government is poised to reveal evidence linking Russia’s RT media network to covert intelligence operations.

According to multiple high-ranking U.S. officials, the Biden administration plans to expose the extent of RT’s role in promoting Russia’s global intelligence and propaganda efforts, as reported by CNN. 

This announcement marks a new chapter in the ongoing fight against Russian disinformation campaigns, which have been targeting undermining democratic processes worldwide.

RT’s links to Russian intelligence

The U.S. State Department is expected to release declassified intelligence showing that RT is deeply embedded within Russia’s intelligence apparatus. 

For over a year, the Russian government has allegedly used RT to establish an intelligence-gathering unit focused on global influence operations, well beyond mere propaganda, according to a CNN report citing officials.

The media outlet has reportedly been involved in intelligence activities, including military procurement efforts, signaling a broader strategy that links disinformation with tangible support for Russia’s war machine.

U.S. officials aim to ensure that governments worldwide recognize the risks associated with RT’s activities.

This move is part of a larger diplomatic effort to weaken RT’s influence and obstruct its ability to operate freely in the global information space.

RT’s funding and Russian military support

The U.S. Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on RT and several affiliated companies for their role in interfering with democratic processes, including the U.S. presidential elections.

Additionally, the U.S. Department of Justice has charged two RT employees with violations related to foreign agent requirements and money laundering.

Blinken underscored the alarming nature of RT’s activities during a briefing, revealing that the media outlet has been directly involved in raising funds for the Russian military through covert crowdfunding operations.

These funds have allegedly been used to procure sniper rifles, suppressors, night vision equipment, drones, and other military supplies for Russian forces in Ukraine.

The U.S. government, alongside the United Kingdom and Canada, has initiated a coordinated diplomatic campaign to raise global awareness of the threat posed by RT and other Russian disinformation channels.

This initiative seeks to rally international allies and partners, urging them to join the effort to counter Russia’s influence in undermining democratic systems around the world.

The Kremlin’s disinformation war

Russia’s use of disinformation as a weapon is a deliberate strategy aimed at weakening democratic societies by fostering division and discord, the report said.
