Talks to end Russia-Ukraine war may start in winter – Tusk

Peace talks to end the Russia-Ukraine war could begin this winter, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said. He made the statement during a meeting of the Polish government on December 10.

Donald Tusk stated that Warsaw will actively participate in any negotiations when it takes over the rotating presidency of the European Union on January 1.

“I will hold a number of talks, primarily concerning the situation on our eastern border. As you can imagine, among other things, our delegation will be co-responsible for determining the political calendar and the situation during the negotiations, which may, although it remains uncertain, commence this winter,” Tusk stated.

Donald Tusk confirmed that French President Emmanuel Macron will visit Warsaw on Thursday to summarize the results of talks with US President-elect Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that took place in Paris last weekend.

The Polish prime minister noted that he is in constant contact with Warsaw’s Scandinavian and Baltic allies and that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will visit Warsaw in the first days of Poland’s presidency of the EU Council.

“I really want Poland to be a country that will not only be present but will also set the tone in making decisions that will bring us security and protect Polish interests,” Tusk said.

Earlier, the US President-elect Donald Trump said that he was “forming a concept” to implement his plan to end the war in Ukraine as soon as possible.

After speaking with Trump and Macron in Paris, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he insisted on “effective guarantees” of peace for Ukraine, as the country is still suffering from Russia’s war of aggression.
