The Ukrainian military has completely liberated Urozhayne in the Donetsk region. The Ukrainian defence forces are consolidating their positions. Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar announced this on August 16.
“Urozhayne has been liberated. Our defenders are consolidating their positions,” Hanna Malyar said in a statement.
According to Malyar, the offensive operations of the Ukrainian military against Russian invading troops continue.
“During the offensive operations, units of the Ukrainian Defense Forces captured the village of Urozhayne and are consolidating their positions,” said Andriy Kovalev, spokesman for the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
According to him, the 35th and the 38th Separate Marine Brigades are firing artillery at the identified Russian targets and are carrying out counter-battery measures in the Donetsk region as part of counter-offensive actions.
Why is Urozhayne important for the frontline?
Urozhayne is a village of the Velykonovosilkovo settlement community of Volnovakha district, Donetsk region. The village is located on the right bank of the Mokry Yaly River.
During the last week, August 6-13, the Ukrainian Armed Forces surrounded the village. It was already clear that the Ukrainians were close to liberating Urozhayne.
After the liberation of Staromayorske, it was only a matter of time before the forces regained control of this village and was the logical next step.
The liberation of Urozhayne will allow Ukrainians to control two roads at once – to Staromlynivka and the village Zavitne Bazhannya, and advance further to the south.
Russian invading troops have occupied Urozhayne since March 2022, the first weeks of the Russian invasion.
In the morning of August 16, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine wrote that the Russian troops near Urozhayne were unsuccessfully trying to restore their lost position.
Urozhayne’s capture is a new step for the Ukrainian counteroffensive
Thanks to the courage of the Ukrainian military and Western weapons, Ukraine’s counteroffensive moves forward, and Russians lose positions – first Staromayorske, and now Urozhayne.
The progress in the Ukrainian counteroffensive is slower than it was expected, as Ukraine still lacks long-range missiles and air cover, while Russians set many minefields.
At the same time, Ukrainian forces are methodically cutting off the supply routes of the Russian troops in the south. It’s part of Kyiv’s campaign focused on setting conditions for the next decisive counteroffensive operations in the south of Ukraine.
