Annexation of Ukrainian territory by Russia is “approved” by Russian Constitutional Court

Crimes committed during the Russian invasion

The Luhansk People’s Republic and Donetsk People’s Republic separatist groups, as well as the temporarily seized areas of Kherson and Zaporizhia, were “approved” to join Russia on October 2 by the Russian Constitutional Court.

Russian Constitutional Court reports via its Telegram channel.

According to the message, the annexation of the territories is a “principled political statement of will” and will take effect as soon as the deal is signed, not when it is ratified.

The court claims that it examined the “constitutionality of treaties on accession to the Russian Federation” and that, when making a decision, it considered “exclusively problems of law, and not the political expediency of negotiating foreign treaties.”

Although the Constitutional Court states that it “guarantees the preservation of the right to the local language, including Ukrainian,” Russian will be regarded as the “state language” in the annexed regions.
