Borrell slams those who advocate Russia talks and halt of aid to Ukraine

Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, assures that Europe will continue to provide military support to Ukraine despite the voices against it.

He stated this in an interview with the Onda Cero radio station.

Majority of Europeans are in favour of continuing to support Ukraine – Borrell

“At the moment, these joint efforts are ongoing,” Borrell said. He claims that, according to Eurostat, the majority of the European population is in favour of continuing to support Ukraine.

Nevertheless, Borrell acknowledged that “it is normal that the war in Ukraine attracts much more attention in border countries that feel directly threatened and have previous experience of what a Russian invasion means” than in Spain or Portugal, where the public interest is waning after more than a year of fighting.

Borrell criticised those who want to end military support to Ukraine

Borrell also criticised those who advocate peace talks and an end to military support for Ukraine.

“What will happen next? If you stop helping Ukraine militarily, it does not mean that Russia will go away. We all want peace, but we need to know what kind of peace we want”.

The top EU diplomat recalled that all the leaders who met with Russian President Putin came back with the same answer: “He has military goals to fulfil, and until he fulfils them, he is not going to stop the war.”

Putin made a gigantic error – Borrell

“Putin has made a gigantic mistake; he believed that in 15 days he could be in Kyiv and conquer Ukraine due to the imbalance of forces”. And he adds that “he has made a gigantic mistake because he has underestimated Ukraine’s capacity for resistance, greatly; he has overestimated the capacity of its army, greatly; he has underestimated the capacity for the unity of the Europeans whom he believed he had taken by the gas; he has underestimated the unity between the US and Europe and the result is that months after the war he has lost 2,000 tanks and is in retreat”.

In addition, a senior EU official claims that Putin may be waiting for the US elections to take place.

At the same time, he noted: “We expect China to influence Putin to stop this war”.

The chief of the EU diplomacy stressed that “the only goal can be Russia’s withdrawal from the occupied territories”.

A day before, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said that the West’s task is to help Ukraine achieve a just peace after the war with Russia, as the Russian president’s goal is to restore the Soviet Union, and he will not stop in Ukraine.
