Canada will provide Ukraine with a new package of military assistance worth 500 million Canadian dollars ($370 million) and participate in multinational efforts to train Ukrainian fighter pilots.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced this during his unannounced visit to Kyiv on Saturday, June 10.
“Today, I can announce that we will provide 500 million dollars of new funding for military assistance. In total, we have already provided over 8 billion dollars, of which 1 billion is military aid,” Trudeau said at a press conference in Kyiv after meeting with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
According to Trudeau, Canada will join the process of training Ukrainian pilots to fly Western aircraft. “We will also provide an additional 287 AIM-7 missiles, which were provided to protect the sky of Ukraine, and in addition – 10,000 155-mm calibre shells,” Trudeau noted.
He also announced the provision of 10 million Canadian dollars to assist those affected by the flood after the explosion at the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station.
As reported by European Pravda, during his visit to Kyiv on June 10, Trudeau also signed a declaration with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in which Ottawa officially supported Ukraine’s accession to NATO “as soon as conditions allow”.
In addition, Trudeau addressed the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s parliament. In his speech, he noted that Ukraine is fighting not only for its survival but also for democracy and freedom. He emphasized that Ukraine’s victory will be in the history books, and Ukraine will define the future of the 21st century.
Trudeau emphasized that Canada wants peace, but it must be on Ukrainian terms. According to him, Russia must leave Ukrainian territory.
