President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen disclosed her discussions with US senators and congressmen about the importance of continuing to support Ukraine.
Ursula von der Leyen said this at a joint press conference with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv.
“When we had conversations during the US summit, we reported on our assistance and talked about the €50 billion that we offered to the European Council, and on which we hope to reach an agreement by the end of the year,” von der Leyen said.
According to Ursula von der Leyen, it was an exchange of views, as the EU and the US have been coordinating their work since day one.
“I also had the opportunity to speak with United States senators and congressmen, where we explained to them what we are doing and why we believe it is extremely important that Ukraine has financial stability and budget predictability,” von der Leyen said.
Earlier, White House spokeswoman Karin Jean-Pierre, commenting on the announcement of military aid for Ukraine on Friday, said that the United States would provide smaller packages of such assistance due to the lack of a decision by Congress on additional funding.
US President Joe Biden is trying to convince the US Congress to support aid to both Ukraine and Israel and approve a new $106 billion aid package, which includes more than $61 billion in funding for Ukraine.
However, the new Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, insists that the aid packages for Ukraine and Israel should be considered separately.
