Germany: drones spotted over military grounds where Ukrainians train

Unknown drones have been spotted over the training grounds and barracks of the Bundeswehr in Germany for over a year, particularly where Ukrainian military personnel are trained.

The German Bild newspaper reported this. A German MP and the Bundeswehr both see links with Russia.

“We regularly spot drones over the Klitsch military training ground, where the Bundeswehr trains Ukrainians on Leopard 1 tanks. At other bases, sometimes several drones rise into the airspace at the same time.”.

Markus Faber, member of the Bundestag from the Free Democratic Party and a member of the Defense Committee

Markus Faber states that sometimes they record the flights of several drones. He emphasized that this “clearly points to Russia.”

The Bundeswehr also suspects that Moscow is behind the drone incursions but cannot prove it.

None of the drones were shot down, according to the German Defense Ministry’s report.

“We must first engage in discussions with the Ministry of Internal Affairs to determine the actions and possibilities in the field of drone defense. We must investigate the effectiveness of protective devices and the speed at which we can purchase them.”

Nils Hilmer, State Secretary of the German Ministry of Defense

“There is a huge backlog when it comes to drones. One thing is clear: Our army needs modern jammers. We need the results of the working group’s work over the next few months.”.

Markus Faber, member of the Bundestag from the Free Democratic Party and a member of the Defense Committee

After Russia’s massive missile attacks on Ukraine, the chairman of the Bundestag Defense Committee, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, also called for Ukraine to receive Taurus missiles. She pointed out that Ukraine is currently in dire need of “ammunition for artillery, Taurus missiles, and spare parts for the large equipment we supply.”

At the same time, the German government continues to refuse to supply long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine.
