Russia is attempting to sway Romania’s elections – Bucharest

In less than two weeks, Romania will have presidential and parliamentary elections, and the country is worried about possible Russian meddling.

According to Digi24, Russia may try to sway the elections through associated structures, reputable people, groups, and even individual candidates.

Romanian lawmakers have called on authorities to look into the possibility of hackers or nations like China, North Korea, and Russia meddling in the election process.

The parliamentary committee’s chair recently underlined the significance of this matter, stressing that capable authorities ought to respond to such threats as soon as possible.

Concerns exist around the actions of so-called “troll networks.” The Minister of Digitalization discovered profiles connected to organized networks disseminating false information in favor of specific politicians on Romanian social media.

Romanian police have also initiated a criminal case regarding alleged attempts to tamper with the election process.

In the face of escalating tensions, Romania’s Information and Security Service (SRI) is closely monitoring Russian individuals and organizations that could potentially jeopardize Romania’s EU and NATO membership.

According to sources in the journal, law enforcement and local officials are doing everything they can to protect the integrity of the election and avoid intervention.
