Russian general killed in war in Ukraine, new estimate of Russian losses revealed

Major General Vladimir Zavadsky, deputy commander of the Russian 14th Army Corps, was killed in the war in Ukraine, as announced by a top regional official from Russia.

The governor of Russia’s Voronezh region, Alexander Gusev, said Zavadsky had died “at a combat post in the special operation zone” (it’s the term Putin’s regime uses for its war against Ukraine) without providing more details, Reuters reported.

Elimination of senior officers of Russian invading forces has been possible thanks to Ukrainian success in intercepting lax communications and the effective use of long-range, high-precision weapons, military analysts say.

The investigative news media outlet iStories said Zavadsky was the seventh Russian general whose death had been confirmed by Moscow and the 12th Russian senior military officer overall to be reported dead since the start of the Russian invasion.

Latest estimate of Russian losses in the war in Ukraine

UK intelligence has released a new estimate of Russian losses in the war in Ukraine. Between February 24, 2022, and November 20, 2023, according to the report, the official forces of the Russian Ministry of Defense probably suffered losses of 180,000 to 240,000 wounded and about 50,000 killed.

Wagner’s mercenaries probably suffered losses of 40,000 wounded and 20,000 killed.

Thus, in total, the Russian side probably suffered losses of 220,000 to 280,000 wounded and about 70,000 killed, British analysts said. And the total losses of Russian fighters range from 290 thousand to 350 thousand people.

The median of this range is 320 thousand total losses on the Russian side.

According to the British analysts, even among Russian officials, there is probably a low level of understanding of the total casualty figures due to a long-standing culture of dishonest reporting in the armed forces.

Russia is losing 500-1000 troops a day in the Avdiivka area

As of December 4, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine estimates total Russian combat losses at around 332,810.

In mid-November, The Guardian quoted Western officials as estimating that total Russian military losses since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine were 300,000 to 400,000.

In the fierce fighting near Avdiivka Russian invading forces is losing between 500 and 1,000 a day, the media reported quoting Western officials.

Despite heavy losses and the severe impact of the sanctions on the economy, Putin’s regime continues its war and the invasion of Ukraine.
