Russian troops fired massive air strikes on Ukraine twice in one day. The Russian invaders fired missiles and drones at Ukrainian cities.
Ukrainian air defence managed to shoot down most of the Russian air targets. However, there was some damage to the infrastructure.
On the morning of May 29, Russian troops launched their 16th attack on Kyiv in May, and this time during the daytime. Previously, Russia attacked the Ukrainian capital on two consecutive nights, before and after Kyiv Day.
Russian massive air attack on May 29
Russian invaders attacked the capital of Ukraine during the day on May 29. The alert in the Kyiv region was announced at around 11:09. And about 11:45, the air raid alert was raised in all central, northern, western, and almost all eastern regions. In particular, residents of nearly all regions of Ukraine heard the warning signals.
Missile debris fell in several districts of Kyiv. An outbuilding was on fire in the Kyiv region, and there were fires in the forests.
There was one casualty in the shelling of Kyiv. City Mayor Vitali Klitschko said there was a casualty in the Podil district. In the Obolon district, a rocket fragment fell on the roadway. Rescue and firefighting services extinguished the burning missile debris.
Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valeriy Zaluzhnyi said that Russian invaders fired 11 Iskander-M and Iskander-K ballistic missiles at Kyiv and Kyiv region, all destroyed by Ukrainian Air defences.
“Around 11:30, Russia attacked Kyiv region with Iskander ground-launched ballistic and cruise missiles. A total of 11 missiles were launched: “Iskander-M” and “Iskander-K” from the northern direction. Air defence forces destroyed all targets and mean”, the statement says.
Russian troops have changed their tactics
The spokesman for the Ukrainian Air Force, Yuriy Ignat, said that the Russians attacked the capital of Ukraine with Iskanders, as well as S-300 or S-400 missiles, which also fly on a ballistic trajectory.
The head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, Serhiy Popko, noted that the Russians had changed their tactics and used bilateral missiles to strike Ukraine.
“This was the 16th attack on Kyiv since the beginning of May. Thus, the enemy has changed its tactics – after long, exclusively nighttime attacks, it struck a peaceful city during the day, when most residents were at work and on the streets. That is, the Nazis are demonstrating that they are aimed at destroying the civilian population,” said Serhiy Popko.
Russian night air attack on Kyiv
The alert in Kyiv was announced around 00:30 on Monday night. It lasted for almost 5 hours. In the morning, the Kyiv City Military Administration stated that this was the 15th massive drone attack on the city since the beginning of May.
“At night, the Russians struck with Iranian-made Shahed attack drones. In addition, Russians launched cruise missiles, probably X-101/555, from the Caspian Sea region using Tu-95MS. Thus, the attack on the capital was a combined one, from different directions and using various weapons,” the Armed Forces of Ukraine said in a statement.
Drones and missiles in the sky of the Lviv region
The western regions of Ukraine, particularly the Lviv region, also came under the blow of the massive Russian air attack. Maksym Kozytskyi, head of the Lviv Regional Military Administration, commented on the enemy’s attack on the region. According to him, Shahed drones and cruise missiles were in the sky over the region.
Air defence systems managed to eliminate the enemy targets. Still, a piece of one of the UAVs fell on a wooden outbuilding in the Zolochiv district, causing it to burn down.
Russian missile attack in Odesa
Odesa, to the south, was also hit by Russian bombardment. A representative of the Odesa regional military administration, Serhiy Bratchuk, stated that the Russian attack hit the port infrastructure of the Odesa region. This caused a fire, which was extinguished by the relevant services.
Ukrainian air defences shielded the country
Ukrainian Air defences neutralized most of the Russian missiles and drones thanks to modern Western air defence systems.
The Air Force of Ukraine reported that the Russian invaders attacked Ukraine’s military facilities and critical infrastructure with cruise missiles and attack drones. The Russians fired up to 40 X-101/X-555 cruise missiles from nine Tu-95MS strategic aircraft from the Caspian Sea; about 35 Shahed-136/131 attack drones from the northern and southern directions.
In total, Ukrainian air defence forces managed to eliminate 67 air targets. In particular, 37 missiles, 29 attack UAVs and 1 reconnaissance drone.
