Slovak presidential election: polls predict opposition candidate victory in first round

Polls predict the highest results in the first round of the upcoming presidential election in Slovakia for opposition candidate Ivan Korčok.

According to Aktuality, according to a poll by Median SK, Korčok would win the first round of the presidential election with 36% of the vote.

Peter Pellegrini, the leader of the Hlas coalition party and speaker of the parliament, would have come in second with 32.7%.

However, according to the study, Pellegrini would have won the second round with 51.7% of the vote. At the same time, Korčok would have come in second with 48.3% of the vote.

According to the survey, Stefan Harabin (11.2%) would have taken third place in the first round of elections. Igor Matovic (4.9%) and Jan Kubiš (3.2%) would follow this.

Researchers surveyed a representative sample of 1,214 respondents from February 23 to 27, 2024.

The first round of the presidential election will take place on Saturday, March 23. The election committee plans to hold a potential second round on April 6. President Zuzana Čaputová’s term expires on June 15, 2024. She will not run again.

Earlier, Pellegrini, as expected, officially nominated his candidacy for the presidency of the Slovak Republic.

Prior to that, polls predicted the highest results in the upcoming presidential election in Slovakia for the leader of the Voice coalition party, Parliament Speaker Peter Pellegrini.

Pellegrini and his Hlas party are coalition partners with the Smer party and Robert Fico, who is known for his pro-Russian statements.

On January 18, about 26,000 people gathered in Bratislava for the fifth round of protests against Robert Fico’s government, which took place in over twenty cities across the country.

Pellegrini’s victory in the election is beneficial for Fico, primarily because it will make it easier for him to govern the country.
