Ukraine and Sweden to jointly produce CV-90 infantry fighting vehicles

On 19 August in Sweden, representatives of Kyiv and Stockholm signed a declaration of intent to manufacture and maintain Swedish CV-90 infantry fighting vehicles jointly.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson informed the media about the deal after a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“I sincerely welcome today’s statement of intent signed just a few minutes ago – the common desire of Sweden and Ukraine to strengthen cooperation on the production, training and maintenance of the CV-90 platform.”

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson

The Prime Minister of Sweden recalled that since February 2022, Stockholm’s total bilateral assistance to Ukraine has amounted to €2.2 billion, including the latest military aid package worth €270 million.

The Ukrainian Army has already received CV90 armoured combat vehicles delivered by Sweden and deployed them on the frontline against Russian troops. Ukraine will receive a total of 1000 Swedish-made CV90 armoured combat vehicles.

CV90 is powered by a 40 mm L70 cannon that can fire at a range of up to 3000 m. CV90’s armour protects the crew from large calibre weapons (up to 30 mm), artillery fragments and anti-tank weapons. CV90 is one of the best armoured combat vehicles in service with armies of NATO member nations.

“Let me assure you that there is no more important task for my government in the foreign policy sphere than supporting Ukraine in its struggle for sovereignty and territorial integrity. Ukraine is fighting for us, for all European democracies”.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson

According to the statement of intent published by the Office of the Ukrainian President, Ukraine and Sweden declared their wish to “strengthen cooperation on the production, operation, training of operators and maintenance of the CV-90 platform”.

“Ukraine and Sweden share the belief that closer cooperation will contribute to the formation of competencies and further development of Western platforms. It will also open up opportunities for further and closer cooperation”.

Ukraine’s President’s Office statement

In June, Ukraine, Czech Republic and Slovakia signed a Memorandum to purchase CV90 infantry fighting vehicles. Now, under the Ukraine-Sweden deal, the fighting vehicles will be produced in Ukraine.
