Josep Borrell, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, called on China to use its influence on Russia to stop the war with Ukraine and asked for help restoring the grain deal between Ukraine and China.
The top EU diplomat Josep Borrell said this at a joint press conference with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
The chief of the EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, asked China to “use its influence on Russia to stop the aggressive war” and called for not supporting the aggressor country.
“So far, and I am grateful for this, there has been no direct military support for Russia, but this is very important for us,” the EU diplomat said.
Mr Borrell emphasised that the war between Russia and Ukraine must end. And for this, peace talks must begin.
“The best way for us to progress in these negotiations is the Ukrainian formula for peace, and we are counting on China’s support,” Borrell emphasised.
The top EU diplomat also said that he called on China to facilitate the resumption of the grain agreement, which would allow the export of Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea.
Previously, Josep Borrell slammed those who advocate Russia talks and halt aid to Ukraine. He assured that the EU will continue providing military assistance to Ukraine to help the country fight Russian war aggression. China, until now, has failed to condemn Russia for the full-scale war it launched in February 2022.
Josep Borrel supports the Ukrainian Peace Formula to stop Russia-Ukraine war. During his visit to Kyiv the top EU diplomat said that membership is the best security commitment the EU can offer Ukraine.
The UN General Assembly overwhelmingly approved a draft resolution incorporating key provisions of Ukraine’s “peace formula” proposed in the fall of 2022. The document is a ten-point plan to end the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.
At an extraordinary session of the General Assembly on Thursday, 141 UN member states voted in favor of the resolution, and 32 abstained (including Iran, Kazakhstan and China).
Only seven countries opposed it: Belarus, North Korea, Eritrea, Mali, Nicaragua, Russia, Syria, and Syria.
Josep Borrell arrived in China after several previous cancellations of his planned visit. The head of European diplomacy was supposed to come in April for the first time but had to cancel the trip due to a positive COVID-19 test result.
Borrell was scheduled to visit Beijing for the second time on July 10 to discuss “strategic issues,” including human rights and Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. But China cancelled the visit.
