The prosecutor’s office in the German city of Flensburg, in Schleswig-Holstein, is investigating an incident involving unidentified drones flying over an industrial area where a shutdown nuclear power plant is located. This information was published by Bild.
According to the newspaper, at least since August 8, drones have been flying at high speed over the area where the shutdown nuclear power plant, liquefied natural gas terminal, and chemical plants are located in Flensburg.
Late on August 20, observers spotted a drone flying at over 100 kilometers per hour in the sky above the nuclear power plant, among other things. The internal police report revealed multiple violations of the no-fly zone.
The last incident with drones occurred on August 22, after which the Schleswig-Holstein police put some of its officers on alert.
The preliminary version of the special services suggests that Russian agents can launch drones over Flensburg from ships in the North Sea for sabotage purposes. It is assumed that these are Orlan-10 drones with a range of 500-600 kilometers and a speed of over 100 km/h.
Senior Flensburg prosecutor Bernd Winterfeld confirmed to Bild that a preliminary investigation is underway “on suspicion of sabotage activities in connection with repeated flights of drones over critical infrastructure in Schleswig-Holstein.”
In recent months, Germany has repeatedly reported attempts to sabotage infrastructure and military facilities.
In addition, unknown drones have been spying on Ukrainian soldiers during training in Germany. And this year, two German-Russian citizens were arrested on suspicion of preparing a sabotage at a U.S. base in Bavaria.
