In addition, Germany gives the green light to its allies to provide their tanks to Ukraine. Our army will receive 14 Leopard-2 A6 tanks from Berlin.
Training of Ukrainian military will begin soon
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that the decision to provide tanks to Ukraine is in line with Berlin’s policy of supporting our country in the war against Russia.
Scholz said that Germany is seeking to assemble 2 tank battalions for our country. However, as a first step, Germany announces the provision of 14 tanks.
“Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced on Wednesday at a government meeting that Germany will further strengthen its military support for Ukraine. He said the Federal Government has decided to provide the Ukrainian armed forces with Leopard 2 main battle tanks. This is the result of intensive consultations with Germany’s closest European and international partners,” the statement reads.
It is noted that the goal of the allies is to quickly assemble two tank battalions with Leopard 2 tanks for Ukraine.
In the first stage, Germany will provide a company of 14 Leopard 2 A6 tanks from the Bundeswehr. Ukraine’s European partners will provide Leopard 2 tanks in turn.
According to the standards of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, a tank battalion that is part of a regiment or battalion consists of 3 tanks in each platoon, i.e., 31 tanks. Suppose the battalion is part of a mechanized regiment or brigade. In that case, there are 4 tanks per platoon, i.e. 40 units in the battalion. Thus, Berlin wants to assemble at least 62 or 80 tanks for Ukraine.
The decision to transfer M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine, which should also unblock the delivery of German Leopard 2s, may be announced by US President Joe Biden on Wednesday. The AP news agency reported this.
