On the night of May 28, Russian invaders attacked Ukraine with kamikaze drones. Most of the Iranian-made “Shakhed” drones were fired at Kyiv.
Russian launched 54 kamikaze drones on Ukraine
Ukraine claimed to have thwarted the largest overnight drone attack on Kyiv since Russia launched a full-scale war. Ukraine’s Armed Forces said they had destroyed 52 of the 54 kamikaze drones launched by Moscow in the country, including “more than 40” in the sky over Kyiv.
Explosions and fire in Kyiv
Ukrainian Air Defence forces reported that they shot down 52 Shakhed drones.
At night, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that explosions occurred in the Solomyansky district. Rescue services were sent to the scene. In the Pechersk district, a fire broke out on the roof of a 9-story building due to the fall of drone debris.
Later in the Solomyansky district, where UAV debris hit a 7-story non-residential building, part of the wall was destroyed, and a fire broke out on the 3rd floor.
In the Holosiivskyi district of the capital, the roof of a three-story warehouse building caught fire due to the fall of UAV debris.
Later, Klitschko said that a fire was being localized in the Holosiivskyi district of over 700 square meters. The destruction of building structures is on a total area of 1000 square meters. Rescuers are working with the latest means and technologies. The fire was localized at 5 am.
The most massive Russian air attack on Kyiv
The Kyiv regional administration noted that this was the 14th Russian air attack on the capital since the beginning of May. Previously, it was the most massive drone attack on Kyiv since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, namely, with Shahed kamikaze drones. The attack was carried out in several waves, and the air alert lasted more than 5 hours.
The falling debris caused casualties and destruction in different districts of Kyiv. In the Holosiivskyi district, due to the downing of drones:
- debris hit a 7-story non-residential building, one person was killed, and one injured was brought to a hospital;
- the roof of a shopping centre caught fire;
- a fire broke out on the territory of a construction site;
- a fire on the territory of an enterprise, warehouses of finished products caught fire, with destruction in the area of 1,000 square meters and one victim.
The Ukrainian Air Force said that on May 28, Russian troops attacked Ukraine with Iranian Shahed-136/131 attack drones from the northern direction – Bryansk region – and the southern direction – Krasnodar region. In total, a record number of 54 kamikaze drones were launched.
On Sunday, May 28, Kyiv celebrates its holiday, the Day of Kyiv. For the second year in a row it’s tainted with Russia’s war and missile attacks on the city.
