President of Moldova reacts to the detention of high treason suspects

Moldovan President Maia Sandu has reacted to the detention of an employee of the Secretariat of the Parliament and an employee of the Border Police suspected of treason and conspiracy against the Republic of Moldova.

The IPN news agency quoted the Moldovan leader’s statements. Maia Sandu said that Moldova should strictly enforce the law in cases of high treason.

“Identifying such cases alone is insufficient; the prosecution’s office and the courts need to take action. When I say ‘punish’, I mean the prosecutor’s office and the courts. I hope that this time the evidence will be serious, and the attitude of the institutions that will sentence these people will be just as serious,” Maia Sandu stated in the JurnalTV program “Secretele Puterii” (“Secrets of Power”).

She said that it is crucial to punish this instance of treason against the homeland with the utmost severity, as mandated by law.

The President of Moldova noted that the phenomenon of high treason and espionage is not unique to Moldova. She added that by cooperating with foreign intelligence agencies, “we can uncover these networks much faster.”

A day before, the Moldovan parliament was searched. The operation resulted in the detention of two suspects.

They are suspected of high treason and conspiracy against the Republic of Moldova while communicating with a Russian Embassy employee.

It was discovered that Ion Cărăngă, the head of the country’s parliament’s legal department, is also the subject of the investigation.

The Moldovan authorities detained both officials, suspected of treason and conspiracy against the national interest, for 72 hours. According to the law, both detainees enjoy the presumption of innocence.
