Diana Sosoaca, the leader of the Romanian party S.O.S. Romania, did not receive registration as a presidential candidate due to her unconstitutional statements.
The Romanian Constitutional Court ruled that Diana Sosoaca’s statements were contrary to “democratic values,” Digi24 reported.
Sosoaca wrote a letter to Putin in which she expressed territorial claims to Ukraine and called for “peace” between Romania and Russia.
Constitutional Court: Sosoaca’s statements are contrary to “democratic values”
The controversial radical leader of the Romanian party S.O.S. Romania, Diana Sosoaca, was refused registration as a presidential candidate in Romania. The Romanian Central Election Commission did not allow Sosoaca to run for office because of her unconstitutional statements.
In its reasoning, the Romanian Constitutional Court recalls that the 49-year-old MEP had already been excluded from the previous election in November 2024, which was subsequently cancelled.
At the time, the Constitutional Court cited her statements as contrary to “democratic values” and as a threat to Romania’s membership of the European Union (EU) and NATO.

However, the politician believes that the decision is related to her repeated calls to establish “good relations” with Russia and that a “real dictatorship” has been established in Romania.
Thereafter, the anti-Ukrainian and pro-Russian politician wrote a letter to Putin.
“On behalf of the Romanian people, who are your brothers in the Orthodox faith, I urge you to ignore the hostile gestures of the illegitimate leadership of Romania under the control of the EU,” Diana Sosoaca wrote in a letter to Putin.
Sosoaca wants Putin to take the letter “as a message of peace on behalf of the Romanian people.” At the same time, in her letter, the leader of S.O.S. România expresses direct territorial claims to Ukraine.
“We have Romanian territories illegally held by Ukraine because of the unjust Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact, which was denounced, and that is why we have the right to defend Romanians in the territories we want to return,” she wrote.
In this regard, she asks Putin to take this demand into account “in the ongoing negotiations on peace in Ukraine.” In this way, she calls for undermining the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and violating international law. In addition, the Romanian right-wing radical is playing along with Russian propaganda, which has been claiming for years that Ukraine’s neighbors are seeking to divide the country.
Romanian presidential elections
At the same time, the Central Electoral Council of Romania allowed George Simion, leader of the Alliance for Romanian Unity (AUR) and an ally of Calin Georgescu, to run for president in the upcoming elections. The right-wing radical, pro-Russian, and anti-European politician Calin Georgescu was banned from running for president again.
Romania will hold presidential elections again after the results of the previous vote in December 2024 were canceled by the Constitutional Court due to foreign (Russian) interference.
At that time, Calin Georgescu won the first round, but the Romanian authorities discovered illegal advertising campaigns, primarily on TikTok, that contributed to his promotion. The identified campaigns lacked the label of “political advertising,” lacked a transparent funding source, and were associated with actors and funds from abroad.
Calin Georgescu banned from running
Repeated elections were scheduled for May 4, 2025. The Central Electoral Council of Romania has banned Calin Georgescu from running in the re-election.
Romanian intelligence services suspect Russia of interfering in the elections, in particular, of using TikTok accounts to promote the pro-Russian and anti-EU Georgescu.
Earlier, Calin Georgescu praised the fascist leaders of Romania in the 1930s, and in an interview with a Romanian journalist, he called Ukraine a “fictional state” and expressed confidence that its territory would be “inevitably” divided between neighboring countries after the war.
Currently, Georgescu is under criminal investigation on six accusations, including membership in a fascist organization and dissemination of false information about his campaign funding. He denies any wrongdoing.
